Agreed with the Doc. I'd look into using foil and hot glue as well! A good pointer would be to seek out statues/figures with smoke effect you are looking for. and if you can't figure it out, that's what this website is for: post the picture of desired effect and ask for advice! good luck!
That's a really vague question, there are different kinds of smoke. Cigarette smoke is way different than the smoke that comes out of a rocket for instance.
I did a quick search and people use things like tufts of cotton, some people sculpt the smoke with putty if you're making a base. For wispy smoke, you could probably smear some hot glue on a piece of glass then just peel it off, could give you a neat 2d smoke effect.
