THE LEGENDS OF GOTHAM CITY: A Custom Action Figure Exhibit in Custom Workstation by darklord1967
Friday, July 19, 2019
   [Edit]
Well as some of you know, I have long been working on a "Legends of Gotham City" line of 1:9 scale (8 inch) action figures and toys.

The figures feature all-original ball-jointed bodies with original head-sculpts, and originally patterned / fabricated clothing and accessories / weapons.

There are 14 characters in the line: 4 heroes, 6 villains, and 4 Secret Identity Characters.

Most recently, as I began to show my work at conventions and Toy shows, I decided that I wanted my figure displays to be as grand as possible.

Instead of simply displaying my action figure work on a comic con tabletop, I thought it might be a lot more fun and impressive to pose the characters in elaborate diorama scenes.

That idea quickly evolved into e...[See More]

Help Re-Assembling a MOTUC buck!! in Custom Workstation by RMK
Friday, July 19, 2019
   [Edit]
I am at my wits end doing a very basic task: heat and pop on MOTUC parts!!

I disassembled a He-Ro II and painted it up with intent to reassemble. But for the life of me, the thighs will NOT go back onto the hip pegs. I have done heat-n-pop until my hands were blistered. I have taken my dremel to the hip pegs to clean off the paint residue. I have taken a rotary bit and tried to clean out the thigh sockets to make sure residue didn't get in there either. But nothing works!

Every time I take my heat gun to the thigh and attempt to pop the peg into the socket, it refuses to go in. The peg compresses and sticks for a moment, but then pushes the thigh piece right back off. I have been stuck at this step for 2 weeks and it just makes no sense, ...[See More]

Can you heat the hip piece and stretch that peg, then cool it so it stays stretched? Then youd heat the thigh and pop it on as usual, and once in there, heat everything so the hip peg goes back to normal.

   [Edit]
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated , I managed to snag a vintage fortress of fangs ,its in pretty bad shape but i like it for the potential , I managed to find repro eye stickers but not the rest, should I try to restore or customise it? Hunting stickers and parts is expensive but would be nice to have a restored one where as customising will be hard but more fun ,thoughts . Should i go all out and hunt down parts or go down bite the bullet and bring out the paint?...[See More]

Can you post pics so we can see the condition? If it's stickers you're needing, find a print shop, either local or online that can print them for you, provided you can recreate the images on a computer.

   [Edit]
Hey everyone, i’m looking to make a figure of Yato from Noragami, and i’m having a hard time finding the base body to do it. I want to keep the Manga/Anime aesthetic, so i was looking at figmas, and S.H. Figuarts, but could not find anything.
Any sugestions would be much appreciated, thanks....[See More]

Hmmm... I'm not overly familiar with him but going off what I can tell from a google search I would look at Naruto for the upper torso (it's a bit bulky on the torso, but the zipper, jacket bottom, and arms are pretty similar and you can thin out the sides and back pretty well) though I'd look for another figure for the legs (rock lee if you want to keep to the same line, but plain pants are pretty basic)

There are some other figures that could also work, such as Master Asia from G Gundam (I've seen a decent tracksuit Gohan done with it) there's a tracksuit Bruce Lee, and if they make a DBS 17 the upper torso might work ok... but I didn't like the bulk of most of them. I'd also look into school anime figures, since I feel the arms and pants would match ok from a typical male school unifor ...

Thank you! I think naruto would work very well. I have not seen naruto so I did not think to look for them. Master asia also might work. All your sugestions are very helpfull, thank you.
Sp//dr in Custom Workstation by TomatoisJP

   [Edit]
So long story short, I'm planning on making my own version of Sp//dr from the Into The Spider-verse film (the film toy is way off model and ugly looking, and the comic version just isn't the same.)

I've got the core of the mech handled (I'm commissioning a modeller I trust to model the solid pieces and then I'll 3d print them) but in the film the joints are actually these oscillating energy tendrils that squash and stretch around. The limbs also swap around, with the upper arms sometimes moving to the back like jet boosters.

I'm trying to devise some sort of system with magnets and clear rotating joints, but I was curious if anyone here had any ideas. This is the last Spider I need for my collection, so I'm trying to go all out with it....[See More]

So the rough plan RN is that I have a 3d model with a hollowed out torso to use as the base, with magnets inside as space allows (discussions of a LED screen are being discussed, we'll see if that'll happen and how much room it'll take up). That's all gonna be a bit, but where I'm stuck right now is the joints.

While the attachment points will likely end with magnets on either end so I can swap them out, my plan was to have the joints be ball-hinge joints (similar to shoulder joints on an action figure) to allow for full range of motion. However, to match the look of the film with its oscillating energy between the sections, I'd LIKE to have those joints be clear so I can paint the energy lines by hand on top of them. The problem is that the Hobby Base joints that most closely resemble w ...

The easiest way would be to make the central part of the mech out of metal, so that the magnets can attach wherever you want. Perhaps a hollow metal ball as the base, with some modeling around it? Or maybe place strips of metal just underneath your sculpt.

Another way to go is to hide strong magnets underneath the sculpt at specific areas where you want the limbs to attach.
Help please in Custom Workstation by Son of Frog

Hello. I am new to the custom action figure thing, and I thought I could find some help here. I want to give my figure a metallic red look by adding a coat of Tamiya x-11 (silver) and then a coat of x-27 (clear red). So I try this but once I add the clear red it just chips away at the silver layer underneath. It's almost as if I'm painting on alcohol and removing the silver (which I guess I am). I thinned both paints, but perhaps I should thin them more? Any suggestions or alternatives?...[See More]

Testor's Model Master Acrylic clear paints work well for what you're trying to do. I've had no problems painting metals first, then clear paints over it. The tamiya paints are weird, I haven't had much success with them.

I've honestly had way more luck and better results mixing clear colors with silver rather than doing them in layers. Also, I don't water down metallics, at most I'll dip the brush in water and lightly squeeze it out before applying the paint, basically enough water to help the paint spread smoothly over the entire surface I'm painting. Oh, AND, I believe it's been mentioned Tamiya paints thin with alcohol rather than water, that's something you may want to research.
