With it, Mattel has been putting out some new toys, specifically new sub-lines, such as Chronicles, yet another highly articulated, collector-focused line, and is said to be taking the place of Masterverse. As much as I enjoy Masterverse, I'm open to a new line, and the figures have been well received. The first figure in the line is Scare Glow, who stands out as he's the only one so far not from the movie, and is also a Walmart exclusive. The packaging takes on a slightly different shape from Masterverse, but we're still getting great artwork depicting not just Scare Glow, but Prince Adam and Cringer as well. You still get figure photos and a bio on the back as well, but the box has a different, slightly simpler aesthetic that seems fitting for a line meant for older fans. You still have to deal with plastic strips holding in the figure, which is always an annoyance, but once those are out of the way, everything goes out of and back into the tray with ease. The box bills this figure as an "Inaugural Edition," probably because he's the first release in the line. Being the other skull-headed Eternian, Scare Glow has an off-white skull/head compared to Skeletor's yellow, alongside some cracks and wash for an aged appearance, and tiny green pupils, a notable change from the red eyes of previous Scare Glows. The portrait looks very nice and realistic, and the aforementioned wash certainly helps. The head also glows in the dark, continuing the tradition of his figures having glowing details. I wish more than the head glowed, given all the bones on his body, and it would add more fun to him. There's an eerie green (non-glowing) flame around his head, made out of a softer, rubbery material, and it can be removed easily while still staying on his collar. Standing about 6 3/4" tall, Scare Glows comes in a slightly smaller scale than Masterverse, and his design seems to be a modernized version of the original figure. He wears a thin cloth cape attached to shoulder pads with a chain in front, a silver belt over a loin cloth with more sculpted-on chains and dog tags, and forearm and shin gauntlets. It's more clothing than his 80s counterpart, and it all looks great on him, including a metallic finish for the chains and belt. There are bones on his arms and legs, as well as a ribcage and vertebrae on his torso, all the off-white as the skull. The forearms right between the elbows and gauntlets are the wrong color, being the same color as the bones rather than his black skin, but that's the only issue with an otherwise great design. He does suffer from some bleed and small marks with the bones and limbs, but the paint overall is consistent and has a mostly flat finish. The Masterverse line already had great articulation that improved over time, but for the most part, Chronicles is quite an improvement. Scare Glow has a barbell head, ball-jointed neck, chest, and waist, ball/hinge shoulders (similar to McFarlane), hinged ball-joint hips, swivel/hinge/swivel wrists and ankles, double-hinged elbows and knees (redesigned for smoother movement), and swivel biceps and shins. Everything works great and has plenty of range, but my main issue is the lack of thigh swivels. I get they omitted those for aesthetic reasons, but without any twist in the upper legs, his poseability is reduced a bit, and mine having a loose right hip doesn't help. Leg issues aside, he poses quite well. There are not as many accessories as Masterverse, as Scare Glow just has four hands - a pair of grips, a closed right, and a relaxed left - and his scythe; nothing hidden inside the box like its predecessor. A few more hands would've helped, especially since the price point is slightly higher. While not without its issues, Scare Glow is a good debut figure for this new line, mainly helped by the great design and increased articulation. I imagine we'll get more standard characters and legacy designs once they get out all the movie figures they want, but there's a bit more they need to do with them if they want it to take the place of Masterverse. Couldn't they have done thigh joints similar to Classics instead of removing them outright? - 5/14/26 by Toasted Brains![]() |
