Although the line only ran for three years, Palisades went ahead and moved on to Sesame Street after losing that license, but they were only able to get one figure out - a convention-exclusive Super Grover - before bankruptcy killed both the company and the line before it could begin. Years later, NECA got the license to give it the quality figures it deserves, and are now working on Muppets, but in the meantime, they've done their own take on Palisades' sole Sesame figure. Grover has a simple design, being a thin, furry, blue monster with a big, pink nose. Fred Aczon did a great job recreating the puppet's design in plastic form, with plenty of detail to his fur, and the colors are accurate, but there is some bleed with the paint here and there. He wears a knight-like helmet as part of his superhero getup, and it's nicely done, with a metallic finish and various dings and scuffs to give it a more worn-out look. Did I forget to mention he has a hinged jaw? It blends in with the sculpt well, and helps make Grover more expressive without the need for an extra head like previous figures. Standing 6 3/8" tall up to the tip of the helmet, the rest of Grover is just as furry as the head, and the detail is very nice, alongside a subtle wash to bring out the texture. As any superhero would, he wears a red cape, made out of cloth and tied to the neck and forearms. The strings around the forearms are a little loose-fitting, so you can slide them off without the need for untying if you feel like making him go cape-less. As simple as the cape is, it looks just fine on the figure, though a wire to pose it more dynamically would've been nice. There's also a lighting bolt and "G" symbol attached to the chest, and wondering how Grover manages to wear it aside, the paint and texture on it are great. NECA announced a regular version of Grover before this one, so we'll be seeing most of this tooling again. When Palisades did their Super Grover, they made his arms bendable because of how long and thin they are, and it really helped with posing for a figure with otherwise little articulation. NECA does the same for theirs, but he also has more joints, including a barbell head and chest, swivel/hinge shoulders, wrists, knees, and ankles, ball-jointed hips, swivel thighs, and a hinged jaw. Aside from the ankles needing some heat to turn on the pegs, everything else works great, and the shoulder and wrist joints combined with bendy arms allow for plenty of fun arm poses. The helmet gets some articulation as well, as it attaches to the head on a barbell joint alongside a hinged visor, allowing you to shift around its position a bit. Grover doesn't have as many accessories as previous Sesame Street Ultimates, but what he has still works well. He has his chance of both relaxed and gripping hands, and the gripping hands have vertical hinges, making them work better for specific heroic poses. He also has not one, but two letters - fittingly S and G. Both are green, with the S having a light shade in addition to stripes and a feminine appearance, and feature a somewhat subtle texture. Lastly, there's NECA's dynamic figure stand, with a hinged and extending arm and an alternate suction cupped base. It's been packed in before with select TMNT figures, and it works great with Grover, as his thin upper body lets it get a good grip on him. The Palisades figure got more creative with the accessories, including parts to turn him into "Grover Kent" and a huge phone booth, but you won't see anything like those here (NECA did at least sneak in the phone booth in promo images). The box mentions extra heads, but he only has the one, making me wonder if there were plans for separate open- and closed-mouth heads until they realized they could just do a hinged jaw. Despite having shown off plenty of characters, NECA's Sesame Street line has been coming out at a slow pace, as Super Grover is only the fourth release (heck, the Count was the only figure in the line to come out last year). I know Big Bird is coming out soon, and hopefully, the rest of the stuff they've shown off releases this year (especially Oscar), but for now, Super Grover is a lot of fun, and it makes me all the more excited for their Muppets figures. Now, if they could just continue their Dinosaurs line… - 4/23/26 by Toasted Brains![]() |
