Mantor and Raplor (Sectaurs) Review
Mantor and Raplor
Sectaurs (Coleco)It's that time again: old c-list toys for the win!
Mantor is the designated lore repository of the story, a master of both martial arts and infodumping. Former advisor to the king, he's gone rogue along with the rest of the main cast, in hopes of heading off a war the authorities refuse to address. As a Keeper, he also knows how to operate the Hyves, should they find any; given that the last time they were activated, they turned everything into bugs, I'm not sure how far to trust hundreds of years' worth of oral history in regards to super-science instructions. I can see why the Keepers have to operate in secret.
Having said all that, this guy stands out for a few reasons: nobody else is rocking a half-monotone color palette, nor a full beard. The exoskeleton is a delightful metallic gradient, invoking real-world species as usual.
Articulation is the usual: true balljoints at the shoulders and hips, plus hinged knees and a swivel neck. It's enough for a couple of fairly restrained poses, but feels limited for a ninja. The antennae are prone to warping, but otherwise quite sturdy. Accessories are limited, but appropriate: a small skall shield, vengun, and crossbow. A clip on the back of the harness holds the crossbow (or the shield, with some difficulty), and the pistol holsters on the hip, opposite a quiver of bolts.
Raplor, as much a ninja as his partner, loves to climb and sneak but hates doing it in daylight. A shiny beetle with enormous mandibles (looking more like horns, it must be said), he has a strange appendage dangling from the mouth area: a black string (around 3 feet long, in fact), ending in an organic-looking handle. Have a figure grab it, turn the crank near the rear of the abdomen, and Raplor hauls 'em right up. It doesn't feel designed for this, with an awkwardly placed hole rather than the wrist clip or regular handle one would expect, but the thumb and forefinger do at least link on there securely. Personally, I'd have gone with a webline or something, but oh well. Aliens.
Mantor, by virtue of being part of this downright weird line, is on the boring end of things. He's a martial artist that doesn't bend right, less colorful than most, and his kit is a little weak. But he's still a kung-fu techno wizard beetle man with a rugged beard, and that's just fun.
