Kevin Eastman (Garbage Man) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - 1990 Movie (Neca)As we all know, last year was TMNT's 40th anniversary, and more than a few companies were celebrating. NECA knew just how to honor the milestone, and while they put out a SDCC-exclusive two-pack of the initial Turtle designs, followed by a redeco for mass retail, NYCC saw them going a step further and making a figure of co-creator Kevin Eastman. This figure apparently comes from a deleted scene from the 1990 movie that was reduced to, I believe, a blink-and-you-miss-it cameo. Now that's a deep cut! Since Eastman worked as a garbage man in the film, it's only fitting that his box art be modeled after a dumpster. It's designed to have some age on it, with plenty of rust, stains, and graffiti, and the motif in general is really nice and unique. This is a window box with a fifth-panel flap, of course, like NECA's other Ultimate figures, and getting the constraints out was no issue. This is definitely a younger Eastman from the time of the movie's filming, and it certainly looks like him, thanks to Trevor Grove. He has curly, somewhat shaggy hair and a thin mustache, and the face and head look accurate to late-20s Eastman. The eyes are a bit squinted, but the happy expression they chose is nice. The paint is done by Geoff Trapp and Mike Puzzo, the usual painting duo for NECA, and the work on the head is alright, but the hair edges could be a bit cleaner, and there are some very small marks on the face as well. Standing a little bit over 7" tall, the rest of Eastman was sculpted by Kyle Windrix, and he's got a standard garbageman uniform on him. I couldn't find any pics of him from the movie, but the outfit looks great. It's mainly a light, somewhat blueish-black, with a cleanly painted name tag on him, and underneath the uniform is a checkered plaid white and blue shirt with rolled-up sleeves. The shirt pattern looks great, and the edges on the outfit are clean. The outfit is somewhat baggy, especially on the pants, and the creases are pretty deep. The shoes look great as well, thanks to the paint wash, and there are clean lines on the soles. Articulation is about as good as the rest of the movie figures, with Kev having a barbell head, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, and knees, ball-jointed waist and ankles, and swivel thighs. I can see why they did ball ankles as opposed to swivel/hinge ones, and they tilt well enough to keep the feet flat in deeper stances. The joints in general move fine, but I really wish NECA would quit using those semi-ratcheted hips for this line. I get that they want to be consistent, but there have been more than a couple of movie figures with ball hips, and they should stick to those from now on. There's not too much in terms of accessories, but what's included is very fitting. Since he's a garbageman, Eastman of course has a garbage bag, stuffed with cardboard and bubble wrap to make it look full, and while he only has one set of hands, he can still hold it in his left hand by the tied straps, thanks to the softer plastic used. And since this is the co-creator of TMNT, he has a clipboard with four turtle sketches on them, and a pen to hold in his right hand, four of them, in fact, so that you have backups in case you lose one. The most unique extra here is the big sewer lid, which was implemented at 28 Union St., Dover, New Hampshire to commemorate the franchise's big 4-0. It's very accurate to the actual lid, with "LAIRDMAN ISLAND" on one side, and the engraved silhouette of the four turtles on the other, and the texture and paint bring out the realism. Never in the history of TMNT would anybody think Kevin Eastman gets an official action figure, but NECA made it happen, and they did great. The paint and articulation could be a little better, but I'm satisfied with the result. NECA recently revealed a second version with a recolored shirt at the New York Toy Fair, so if you missed out on him when he was available, then you'll have another chance. - 3/4/25 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
