Tatsu (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - 1990 Movie) Review
Tatsu
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - 1990 Movie (Neca)The NECA TMNT movie line has become a slow burn as of late, as they've been going through all the key characters at a steady rate. The main cast of the first movie has been made into figures, with the exception of Tatsu. There were many requests for Shredder's second-in-command, but supposed issues in securing the actor's likeness prevented it. Eventually, NECA was able to sort things out, and at long last, he's joined the line.

Unlike the two-packs, the single-packed movie figures have made use of some unique packaging art, and Tatsu's has a sketchy red motif, with his portrait on the front. Out of all the movie Ultimates, this one is the best one, with a more menacing-looking box that stands out from the rest of the singles. There's only a single tie in the tray, thankfully, and opening up the figure and getting everything out was a breeze.

In the movies, Tatsu was played by Toshishiro Obata, but since he wasn't fluent in English, Michael McConnohie did the voice. Trevor Grove, NECA's main actor likeness guy, did the visage for him, and it's a pretty great likeness. The head feels a little on the smooth side, though that's because of the shaved head. The hairline is painted on, but it would look nicer if it faded at the edges. In addition to the stoic head, Tatsu also gets a shouting expression. Probably not fitting to his personality, but it looks alright, aside from the smaller chin. Both heads have clean paint on the faces, but the mustache looks a little too long on them. It's not a perfect likeness, but overall, I'm pleased with the final product.

At about 6 3/4" tall, Tatsu is a standout from the others in that he has tailored clothing. Sure, Splinter was the first to utilize cloth, but Tatsu has more on him, and the patterns of the clothes is unique. There's the striped robe that extends to the thighs, and kimono pants that cover the actual pants and boots underneath. The bare torso is sculpted underneath the robe, but the robe isn't removable, and that's partially because of the plastic bit over it. I'm not sure what to call it, but it is a belt with some kind of draped clothing in the back attached via straps in the front. The belt has a piece of stretchy fabric on it, similar to the other Foot members, and it's useful for holding accessories. The paint on the plastic clothing is clean, with a good texture for both the torso piece and pants, and there's also some musculature sculpted on the underlying torso.

Being played by a professional swordsman and martial artist, it's necessary that Tatsu has useful articulation. He gets a barbell head and chest, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, and ankles, ball-jointed hips, swivel waist and thighs, and double-hinged knees with swivels above the kneecaps. It's nice to see another movie figure with ball hips rather than those outdated ratcheting ones, as they move much smoother, and the joints in general move smoothly but hold a pose well. The heads and hands swap with no issue, and no need for heat either, but the wrist hinges are pretty tight, so you'll need to work them a bit, and use hot water or a hair dryer if needed.

Despite not using any weapons in the movie as far as I know, Tatsu does wield a sword here, supposedly a nod to his actor. The sword comes with a sheath, which both looks great and has a string tied around it. There's two ways to get it around his waist, either by tying the ends of the strings around the other side, or just by sticking it in the elastic belt. For training Foot recruits, Tatsu also comes with a wooden sword, which is notably longer, and carries a good texture and paint. Two fans are included, one open and one closed, and there's a specific right hand for holding them, alongside closed, gripping, and flat pairs of hands. In addition to all that, there's a foot mask for him to hold, and an oni mask to wear. I'm certain that mask wasn't in the movie at all, but it's a nice extra NECA came up with, and it fits just fine over both heads.

Tatsu has been a figure fans have wanted for a long while, with some even making their own, but NECA delivered one heckuva great figure. They handled the likeness and outfit well, and the unique accessories add more to the character. However, being a Walmart-exclusive NECA figure, he's proven hard to find. I got lucky eventually, managing to find him at a store I don't think I've ever went to before, and he was well worth the search.
