Bane (Exclusive) (Batman (Mondo)) Review
Bane (Exclusive)
Batman (Mondo) (Mondo)I'm not much of a sixth-scale guy, mainly because they're so expensive, but Mondo is one of the best companies in that department. Reason being that they're the only ones really willing to make animated characters in this scale, with properties such as Batman, X-Men, Masters of the Universe, and a good deal more. I haven't gotten too much of their stuff, since I only have so much space and money, their Batman line is great, and their latest release is here in the form of Bane. He didn't have much of a presence in BTAS, but I was looking forward to getting him once he was revealed.

Bane, as is usually the case for sixth-scale figures, comes in a huge box. It doesn't seem to be as long across as others in this line, but man, is it deep. The box is simple in design, being a solid blue color, but Danny Haas' paintings for Bane on both sides of the front flap are great, and his name on the sides of the box are lifted right from his debut episode's title card. The packaging also has the advantage of being easy to open, as only a few bits of tape need to be removed to get the contents out, and the figure itself, as well as a couple accessories, are in little plastic bags, to ensure they don't get damaged during transportation.

Bane's design in the cartoon was primarily based off how he appeared in comics at the time, but with a couple changes to fit Bruce Timm's art style. The comic Bane didn't have his nose and mouth peering through his wrestler mask, and the eyes appear to be narrower as well. Tommy Hodges, a name I doubt I've heard of before this figure, sculpted him well, both matching the cartoon perfectly and giving him a fitting stern expression. Bane has two other heads as well, one shouting, and another with gritted teeth, depicting various stages of rage. You'll need to heat up the heads in two spots to swap them the first time: the socket at the bottom, and the hole for his venom tube in the back. Said tube is made of a very soft plastic, so you won't have to worry about it being damaged at all when posing him.

The man who nearly broke the Batman (in TAS, at least) stands around 13" tall, making him the tallest figure in the line so far. Bane is dressed in a luchador outfit, with a black leotard and boots, blue pants, and a glove on his left forearm, with his venom supply attached to it. He's also a muscular guy as well, and this is before venom flows in his veins, and he's equally solid plastic, giving him plenty of heft. He'll have a lot of presence on your shelf, especially if you have other figures from this line. Tomasz Rozejowski did the paint for him, providing bold colors and painted "shine" on the outfit. There's no shading on the skin, but I feel that's for the better, since cel shading on figures can often end up looking pretty half-assed or weird. There's a few fuzzy edges and marks on my Bane, but I'm satisfied with the result overall.

Mondo's usually pretty good when it comes to integrating articulation with animated characters, and Bane is no exception. He has a barbell head, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, knees (double-type), and ankles, revolver joint wrists, ball-jointed chest, waist, and hips, and thigh rotation. The joints are pretty tight, as to support the heavy plastic Bane's constructed from, but move with no issue. You'll want to heat up the heads and forearms before swapping parts the first time, but the extra heads and hands swap with little issue. His frame does limit some of his poses, namely in the head, and the pelvis often forces the hips to snap back into place if you extend them out too far, so that's an annoyance, albeit not a major one.

There's not much accessories here, with the aforementioned extra hands, four sets of hands (open, grasping, gripping, and closed), a dumbbell, a crushed batarang, and the usual stand with support arm. That's all for the regular edition, but the timed edition gives you a huge extra in the form of an alternate upper body. This comes from the episode's climax, in which Batman uses a batarang to short out Bane's venom suppliant, resulting in more of the juice than his body can handle. The torso and arms are much more muscular, and seriously heavy and solid plastic as well. The painted veins are clean on this alternate body, and the head fits it well: the lenses on his mask have popped out, leaving Bane with a bug-eyed expression, screaming in agony. You'll want to do some heating up to swap torsos, but the legs are able to hold it up, and the unique head and hands can be swapped onto the regular body, as vice versa. It's already worth the extra $20, but the timed edition gives us two more extras: an unmasked Bane head and a mask piece. Poor Bane has been left with a disheveled expression following his near death experience, and I had no problem popping it onto the joint. The mask piece of the neck is also a separate piece on the base torso, a good extra detail to ensure a seamless look.

Bane (specifically the timed edition) was the most I paid for a single figure, but he was very well worth it. He's huge, looks and poses great, comes with plenty of extra parts, and I'm not saying that you need the extra torso that came only with the timed edition, but it adds a lot more to him. Mondo has done a great job with Batman's rogue gallery, including the upcoming Scarecrow and Clayface, but I'm hoping they get around to Robin at some point, because he won't be able to take on all those crooks and creeps by himself.
