Bride of Frankenstein (Color) Universal Monsters (Neca) (Neca)I've seen a good handful of Universal monster and sci-fi movies, and out all of them, the original Frankenstein movie is my favorite. I've seen the follow-up, Bride of Frankenstein, as well, but so far I've only seen it once, and I'm due for a rewatch now that it's the perfect time for horror. It's not surprising that NECA followed up the monster with his bride, and she was the only Universal Monster figure I had that went uncovered, until now. In the original Mary Shelley novel, the idea of Frankenstein's monster having a wife was there, but she never got completed. The Universal movie brought the character to life, and she was played by Elsa Lanchester. Trevor Grove, who usually handles the likenesses for the monsters, brought the Bride to figural form, and she looks just like the aforementioned actress. She has a blank, zombie-like stare, as opposed to the more human expressiveness of her fiancé, though the iconic screeching look. Both heads are brought out by the impressive paint work, with clean work on the faces and visible stitches along the jawline. This figure also brings the once-monochrome Bride into full color, with a more human-like skin tone than the male monster, and who knew she was a brunette? The third head is near-completely covered in bandages, with only the eyes visible through them, and it's because of this the portraits swap at the base of the neck using a square-ish peg, rather than at the top. The Bride stands about 7 3/8" tall, but it's really her big beehive hair that brings her up to that height. The rest of her body is covered in bandages, many of which overlap each other, along with some big staples on the chest, and are cast in a semi-darkened white. Speaking of which, the bandages on the chest are a separate layer of a slightly soft plastic over the upper torso, and I think it's to keep the shoulder bandages from interfering with arm movement. The body proportions seem to be accurate to the film, albeit leaning a bit into the curvaceous side, thanks to Kyle Windrix and Alex Heinke. There's also the big white dress draped over her torso and legs, made out of a stretchy fabric. You can take it off her with ease after removing the head and hands, but I'd be mindful of the strings in the back, because I imagine it'd be hard to retie those if they come loose. The Bride has a bit less articulation than the other Universal Monsters, but that doesn't mean she moves great. She has a barbell head and chest, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees, and ankles, ball-jointed hips, and thigh rotation. The joints move great, and the range is plentiful on them. The downside to the sculpt is that the slender feet can impede balance in more dynamic poses, and not helping them is the usual lack of peg holes in the feet, meaning you can't use the usual figure stands for her (a more dynamic stand like Mezco or SHF would help plenty, though). The Bride doesn't have a lot of accessories due to her small screen time, but she has three portraits, two pairs of hands (relaxed and splayed), a bandage piece to fit over the eyes on the bandaged heads, and two loose bandages that can be hung onto the arms. Not much, but it at least allows you to change up her look on the shelf, and I imagine we'll get an accessory set for her at some point. Frankenstein's monster's bride isn't the only female monster in the Universal Monsters movies, but she's the most well-known, and NECA gave her just as good of a figure as any other monster they've done. The accessories aren't anything too deep-cut or exciting, and the lack of peg holes to aid in standing is a little annoying, but she's worth picking up, especially now that we have the monster as he appears in the film, complete with chair. He seemed to be a NECA Store exclusive initially, but I saw he's showing up at Best Buy now, and I may as well search for him out there instead of dealing with NECA's high shipping costs. - 10/13/24 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
