Keno (Foot Training) / Foot Soldier Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - 1990 Movie (Neca)NECA may have been going all out with TMNT figures as they relate to the original cartoon (and soon, the 2012 one) and comics, but the New Line movies they've been handling at a slower pace. There's only so much they can do from those films now that they've gotten through the major players, including the long-awaited Tatsu, but I assume they still have some plans for the first two movies before moving onto the third film. Last year gave us Keno from Secret of the Ooze, albeit as a SDCC exclusive, whereas Walmart got a "Foot Training" version. This look for Keno is a specific one, coming from when he infiltrates the Foot Clan with Raphael's assistance, and has to engage in combat to prove his worth. Trevor Grove, one of NECA's best when it comes to real-life people, provided the portraits for Keno, and not only is the likeness to Ernie Reyes Jr. incredibly accurate, but the expressions are pretty good. He has both a mid-combat shouting face and an intense grin, with the bangs on the default portrait being a bit more higher up. The paint work on the face is very clean, as is the hair, but the hair could be better on the grinning head, with bleed on the left sideburns and some missing paint near the lower back, right under the head socket. Standing 6 1/2" tall, Keno is a teenager in the film, but the height on him is much more accurate than the previous TMNT movie human teen figure, Danny (since this one isn't built off another figure from a different line). May Thamtarana did the body for him, just like his regular version, and this version gives him a baggy, loose-fitting tank top, and there is a sculpted chest underneath, but the abdomen is just a chunk of red plastic. The tank top has a funky pattern, with plenty of shapes and text, and it looks great, thanks to the usual team of Trapp and Puzzo. Other than that, he also wears jeans (or sweatpants), sole-less shoes with straps, and a pair of gloves with the ends being separate pieces on the forearm. In contrast to the dark shirt and pants, the gloves and shoes are a very bold red, but with a bit of bleed and fuzziness. Keno/Ernie was a very athletic guy in the film, so of course he'll need plenty of articulation. He gets a barbell head, chest, and waist, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, and ankles, ball-jointed hips, thigh swivels, and double-hinged knees with a swivel above the kneecap. The joints work pretty well, but you'll want to be mindful of wrists, as they can be tight due to paint, and I've seen some breakage with them, so you'll want to pop them off and blast them with heat first before moving them. As for accessories, Keno has a pair of bare-handed grips, a handful of bells (a more specific extra), a TGRI canister, and a big punching bag. The bag is held up by a stand that's just over 7 1/2" tall, and addition to real chains supporting it, the bag is a solid hunk of plastic, giving it some good heft. NECA put out a set of SOTO Foot Soldiers, but I can live without those due to them just being repaints, but this set gives us a more unique one. Sculpted by Brodie Perkins, this ninja has a taller head and alien-like eyes on the mask, as well as a wider, fatter torso. The torso is mostly solid, while the belt just overlays the waist, but has a different sculpt whilst retaining the elastic fabric belt over it. The arms and legs are the same as the basic FS, and contribute to its height of about 7" tall. The paint on the outfit is different from the first movie Soldiers, being less bluish and a bit more dusty-looking, alongside a darker red for the bandana. The paint makes use of plenty of wash for a nice appearance, and the edges are mostly clean, but the hands could be a little better. Even with the different body, the fat Foot Soldier retains the same movement as the skinny ones, with a ball-jointed head, neck, and waist, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows (double-type), wrists, hips, and ankles, swivel thighs and bandana tie, and double-hinged knees with swivels above the kneecaps again. Like Keno, he suffers from tight wrist hinges, and why are these movie figures still using ratcheted hip joints? Keno has ball hips, as do most of the other SOTO figures, and these ones work fine, but the joint style is admittedly outdated. The Foot Soldier gets three sets of hands - closed, gripping, and grasping - and a pair of small fight sticks. Not a lot, but I imagine most of the accessory budget went to that punching bag. Despite not being the most major focus when it comes to TMNT, NECA's been going pretty deep with the movie line (anyone else see that garbageman Kevin Eastman that got revealed recently?), and we've never gotten a Keno figure before them, let alone too. Even though the SDCC Keno isn't going for too high prices from what I've seen, and I would love a regular retail release since I don't need all the bonus goodies that come with him, this version still fits in the collection well, and I'm satisfied with both him and the included Foot Soldier. Now give us Paige Turco April, Splinter, and maybe Vanilla Ice and we can call it a rest with SOTO. - 9/24/24 by RMaster007 |
