Captain Shiner ThunderCats (Super7) (Super7)The world of Thundercats is quite expansive, with plenty of unique characters and species. The old LJN line did much of those characters, but there were still some left unmade in figure form that now have ones thanks of Super7. I thought Captain Shiner was S7 only since he only appeared in two episodes, but no, LJN did him too. Both of his appearances showed he was a mercenary for hire employed by Mumm-Ra, but he was willing to help out the heroes in his debut, so in a way, he's the TC Ultimates line's first "neutral" character. Shiner's face reminds me a bit of a Sphynx cat, especially with the pinkish skin. The ears aren't very catlike, though, being rather small and pointed. I'm not sure if he's supposed to be a catman not associated with the Thundercats, but one thing's for sure, the likeness is great. I assume Four Horsemen are still the sculptors for this line, and Shiner looks just like the show, complete with his big cheeks and jowls. Our mercenary has three heads: neutral, gritted teeth, and shouting, and all of them look great on him. The monocle(s) attaches to the large strap on the torso, and it plugs in and out with no issue, so you won't have to worry about it breaking. The paint on all three portraits is clean, aside from the occasional, but tiny, gray mark, and the wash enhances the flat design a bit more. Shiner's uniform looks like it could've come right out of the 19th century, and the design is pretty simple, aside from the spacey-looking boots. You can make out his chest under the shirt, and the sleeves have some wrinkles on them, mainly on the biceps and elbows. The bottom of his top is a soft, rubbery material that's part of the aforementioned strap, and I assume they only did it like that to keep the strap on the body, but said bottom looks misshapen. The colors match the show well, with some purple-ish hues, and he's given a matte coat, something Super7 has been doing more often with Ultimates as of late, and the finish makes for a much better look than the cheap looking gloss of past Ultimates. Shiner stands 6 1/2" tall, and while I don't really have anyone to compare his height too, word is he's undersized, and I think being a direct 7" would make him scale better with the others. Articulation is a high point here, as Shiner has plenty of useful joints. He gets a barbell head, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles, swivel biceps and thighs, a ball-jointed waist, and an ab crunch. There's not much tilt to the waist, and the knees can't quite achieve 90 degrees, but everything else works great and moves with no issue. The right hip is kinda wonky, however, being somewhat tight out of the box, but it's easy to work free, though there's some off-putting gapping at the pelvis. All the interchangeable parts swap easily, and while you will hear a loud pop when swapping off heads, I assure you no heat is needed. Since Shiner only appeared twice in the show, he's not going to come with much accessories, but everything is fitting. He's one of the few Ultimates to come with extra arm parts, as he has a pair of crossed arms on him in the box. These arms swap at the biceps, and peg in and out with no problems. There's also extra hands, of course, with a pair of gripping hands, a pair of fists, a pointing left, and grasping and open ("presenting") right hands. Both the gripping and pointing hands have vertical hinges, allowing them to work great in plenty of poses. The mercenary is armed with a simple, sci-fi blaster, and a pair of shackles that not only have a metal chain, but can open up to clamp onto any figure's arms, albeit a little too big to fit onto Shiner's own. Lastly, there's a depowered Sword of Omens, with the Eye of Thundera covered up by a cloth to keep it from harming Shiner or his employer. For a minor character, Super7 nailed Shiner. He's only my second Thundercats Ultimate I've gotten from them, but he's one of the best Ultimates I've held and played with. Now that S7's doing "Deluxe" figures with very few accessories for a more reasonable price, that feels like a good opportunity to do a LJN throwback Shiner redeco with that funky red blaster. Only time will tell if it happens, however, but if it does, I'm buying. - 9/19/24 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
