Psycho Toxic Crusaders (Playmates)Bet you didn't see this review coming. The Evil Advisor is a pretty common trope in fiction, doubly so if the person they're advising is also evil. What set Toxic Crusaders apart is that Psycho, here, can actually tell the future, but the heroes' tactics are invariably so ridiculous that Dr. Killemoff assumes a bad reading every single time. No wonder this poor guy never seems to have much enthusiasm. As was the house style at Playmates, while the toy looks like the character, it's somewhat extreme by comparison, with plenty of fun details. His double chin is spattered with red goo, chunks of green slime cling to his clothing, and his fully sculpted bellybutton is nearly lost in the folds of his stomach. He's got a slightly dazed look on his face, for whatever reason. Said face has lumpy skin, sculpted stubble on his lower 2 chins, and a really unsettling eye. It's kind of gross, overall, which is what they wanted. Paint, as usual, can't keep up with the sculpt, but they tried. A lot of the slime bits on the back are left bare, as are the metal arm bits visible through the torn coat. Lovely work on the skullcap, though. Articulation is fairly TMNT-esque as usual, with balljoint hips, swivel shoulders and neck, one wrist swivel, and one elbow hinge. Nothing is terribly restricted, although the hoses on the head and arm do like to pop out, and have fun reattaching them. Accessories are few, but good. Despite his non-combat role, he is toting a sci-fi rifle, which appears to fire either liquid or gas judging by the canisters on it. A trapezoidal chainsaw with several pulleys mounted on it confuses me to no end, and the gas mask is a royal pain to apply (damn those head-hoses!), but looks great in place despite its solid colors. At the end of the day, this neon grotesquerie blends well with TMNT, stands out a mile away on a shelf, and looks absolutely amazing under a UV light. If it weren't for those hoses, he'd be a 4.25, but functionality matters. by Karl T. Face |
