Casey Jones (Business Suit) & Foot Soldier (Split) (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon) Review
Casey Jones (Business Suit) & Foot Soldier (Split)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca)NECA's TMNT line has notably seen a shift from doing just about everyone, both major and one-shot, to putting out a bunch of character variants at once. Not that that's a bad thing, as I've said before, variants are common in animated licenses, and the original cartoon has plenty of unique outfits, if not forms, for each character. That includes Casey Jones, a minor presence in the show compared to everything else TMNT, with his much-requested suit and tie from "Corporate Raiders from Dimension X."

Since we've gotten Casey Jones already in the line, NECA could've just reused the head from the regular version for this specific look. But no, he has a newly-sculpted head provided by Tomasz Rozejowski. The mask is smaller and shaped better, with his ears being visible behind it, the eyeholes are narrower, and the hair is more detailed. This head fits on the basic Casey body fine, if you don't mind the different skin tone. The colors on it are much bolder overall, and the paint is clean as well. That's not all: the figure also reveals what an unmasked '87 Casey would've looked like. This portrait bears a grin with a missing tooth, along with various cuts, scrapes, and bandages, having been in a couple fights and ready for more. The cartoon's style was captured perfectly with this head, and yes, it also fits on the basic Casey.

Standing 6 1/2" tall, Casey swaps out his vigilante outfit in favor of something more office-friendly, with a coat, tie, and jeans. As expected with the coat on a NECA figure, it's a piece of soft plastic overlaying the body, but what isn't usually expected with NECA is that it can be removed, with buttons holding it in place, and a pair of alternate arms to go with the coatless look. The sculpt on both the coat and shirt is good, with his chest being somewhat prominent under the shirt, and the paint is mostly clean. The usual cel shading is present on the coat and pants, but not the shirt. Speaking of, there's a little black smudge on the shirt by the left shoulder, but the coat should cover that up.

Even in corporate wear, Casey is just as posable as before, with a barbell head and waist, swivel/hinge shoulders, wrists, and ankles, swivel biceps and thighs, double-hinged elbows and knees, and ball-jointed hips. The joints don't suffer from any tightness, but heat is recommended when swapping heads and arms. As for the other accessories, the weapons are all recycled, with two bats, two hockey sticks, and a sledgehammer, but the bag is a new sculpt that can accommodate most of them better. He also gets interchangeable hands - two closed, two relaxed, two gripping, and wide-grip right - and two episode-specific items: a spritzer and a box with (removable) papers.

The first Casey was packed with a Foot Soldier sliced in half, so this one does as well, albeit vertically rather than horizontally. I recall it being talked about in an interview that they wanted to do this version, so it's nice they finally got to. Tomasz did the new sliced head and torso, but the rest is Trevor Zammit's work. The new tooling looks great, with plenty of exposed wires and tech on the insides, and a more worried look to the eyes. The colors are different as well, with a bolder look that feels close to stock art, but it notably lacks cel shading. It's odd that it isn't, since Casey got it. Given this, the Don/Mike set, and the updated Bebop and Rocksteady set, it's raises the question of it NECA is ditching cel shading for this line.

Also standing 6 1/2" tall, the Foot Soldier lacks head movement due to the bisected torso, but everything else is still there, with swivel/hinge shoulders, wrists, and ankles, swivel biceps, waist, thighs, and shins, double-hinged elbows and knees, ball-jointed hips, and hinged toes. As with past Foot Soldiers, the shoulders are a little tight, but not as bad as before. The Soldier's only weapon is its usual blaster, along with four sets of hands - closed, tight grip, gun grip, and grasping. The open hands work with the sculpt great, and the tighter grips are there if you want it to hold Casey's accessories, but mine is yet another instance of NECA including two of the same hand - the right grip - with it instead of a proper pair. Why don't I inspect these more closely before buying?

Not only are these fun looks for the characters, but the creativity and heart put into making them makes it a fun pair, even if it's something less die-hard fans will go for. While I would love for NECA to get to a few more unique characters, I'm more than welcoming for some variants. Maybe they can do Shredder in a suit as well? SDCC is coming soon, so they should give us a peak into the line's future then.
