Scumbug (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Super7)) Review
Scumbug
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Super7) (Super7)Scumbug isn't a TMNT character you see talked about much. He wasn't really present much in past media, being just a one-time character in the original cartoon, and some other versions like the Archie comics barely looked like him, though Mutant Mayhem reintroduced him (or in it's case, her) to today's audiences. NECA already made a great figure of him a while back, but that hasn't stopped Super7 from making their own version.

While NECA's Scumbug was a recreation of the toon design which was no different from the original Playmates toy, Super7's more directly updates the toy design. Most of that involves simply making him more colorful, with all those little bugs crawling over him now being painted, along with a few other additional colors. There are some changes to the overall design as well, like the additional of a removable utility belt, placed over his regular belt, and a less grotesque looking abdomen. The original toy had some extra bug arms sticking out of the shirt a bit, but those are gone here. I guess it was too hard for their designers to figure out how to work those in.

The head hasn't changed much design-wise, aside from his gums now being visible, thanks to the larger scale and increase in paint. The old toy had a jaw that moved, but it really just hung loose and closed when you turned his head to the side. The jaw here, however, moves more properly, and stays in place when hinged, but it can't be closed shut. The alternate head does have a closed mouth, along with swirly antennae and eyes. I don't recall Scumbug having hypnosis powers, but it's just one of those unique things Super7 came up with. By default, the bug stands about 7 3/8" tall, and the use of wash on the clothes and antennae is nice, but some on the purple skin would've made him look better. Still, the paint is clean, and I like the more matte finish compared to previous releases.

Scumbug bears the same articulation scheme as other Ultimates, with a barbell head, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles, swivel waist, thighs, and shins, and a (rather useless) ball-jointed chest. The default head, in addition to having a hinged jaw, has ball-jointed pincers. I honestly wasn't expecting those, and they allow his appearance to adjusted a lot more. Aside from the chest, most of the joints work great, and the heads and hands swap with ease, but you will want to be mindful of a few tight joints. If anything feels stuck, play it safe and use a hair dryer.

The original Scumbug had a bug pack with a "turtle exterminating" gun, so of course the Ultimate does as well. The designs are a little different, especially the gun, but they're really more colorful than the solid green of the original accessories. Like before, the pack plugs into the back, with rubber hoses plugging into the chest and gun. They pop in easily, but tend to come out easily as well. The spraying tool, which reminds me of what a real exterminator would use, is a new addition, and it too plugs into the hose. Also recycled from the original toy are a couple little roaches, six in fact, but now the body has four spots (two on the stomach, one in the left arm, and one in the left leg) for them to plug into, and you still have two left over to crawl around. Definitely a cool feature that proves S7 can get creative when they want to. Four pairs of hands are included - grasping, gripping, closed, and gun grip - and as said before, they swap with no issues.

Even though NECA made a pretty darn good Scumbug, Super7's version is miles more enjoyable, thanks to the great visuals and unique features, and unlike the former, he actually has interchangeable hands. That said, he is a bit pricer than usual at $65; it's not as bad as Wingnut, but I don't see any reason here they needed to raise the cost. If you can get him to closer to average Ultimates price, though, I wouldn't hesitate.

This is quite a good toy. I love Scumbug. I am not paying that.
