Mighty Morphin Eye Guy (Power Rangers Lightning Collection) Review
Mighty Morphin Eye Guy
Power Rangers Lightning Collection (Hasbro)Ironically, I eyeballed this extensively when it came out. Finally pulled the trigger on a trade, but there's a reason I waited.
As a Kaiju nut and mythology fan, I couldn't turn down another classic Dora Monster in the end. This one's based on Argos, the hundred-eyed giant that guarded one of Zeus' side pieces from his frequent advances, despite her having already been turned into a heifer. Dora Argus, meanwhile, was created to trap a little girl in a nightmare dimension to break her spirit so their pathetic resident vampire could actually drink human blood for a change. Either way, this is some wacky stuff.
First, the good. This thing is big, hefty, and very well sculpted. Various eyes are half-closed, and the freaky skin texture looks great. The articulation is the usual Lightning Collection spread, somewhat restricted by his bulk, but still plenty good. I particularly like the balljoint eye and hinged eyelid, although the horizontal movement is a bit finicky; you kinda have to tilt it up and down, and walk it into position. Still good for a lot of personality. We get fists, an open left hand, and a clutching right.
Accessories are killer: a floaty eyeball on a clear stand, with clear green energy swirling around it (dotted with unpainted eyes) looks great all around, and a whole "contact lens" can be removed (with some difficulty) and replaced with an energy blast version. This can be done with the figure too, but it's a pain because of the balljoint.
And then there's the paint. I can see why they couldn't do a full paint wash and paint every eye, especially when these molds aren't gonna see any reuse, but I assume we'd have had more than half the eyes painted if they'd gone with plain off-white plastic. As it is, we have patches of painted eyes on nearly the entire front, and only a bare scattering on the back and sides. The paint wash looks great, but only exists on the hands and "head", so it contrasts starkly with the stark white everything else. It looks like he's wearing long sleeves. The fingertip eyes don't even get paint. This is in dire need of a paint wash. At least eyes are easy at this size.
So, it was close to greatness, but choked on the paint. Which is kind of a big deal on a pile of eyes. I can't recommend this too hard if you're used to good paint, but it's an easy custom, so it has that going for it. 3.5 on balance.

Every Lightning Collection figure is a clear case of Hasbro cheaping out on paint

Hey, I just wanted to see if I could fix it. Turns out Speed Paint, cotton swabs, and a shop towel are about all you need.
