Wheelie (Transformers - Generation 1) Review
Wheelie
Transformers - Generation 1 (Hasbro)Well, it's Wheelie. If you're the type to want to read Transformers toy reviews, you're probably not a fan of this guy. Hell, Floro Dery doesn't care much for him, and he designed him! But that doesn't necessarily guarantee a bad toy, does it? And hey, he was the only new-mold Minibot of his wave. Had to be something special, right? Either way, be thankful I'm not doing this whole thing in rhyme.
For starters, vehicle mode. It's, ah.... creative. Definitely looks like an alien car. Also looks like a dustbuster, or a geoduck. Or other, less polite things. The color scheme, best described as "candy corn: disassembled", works better in person than on paper, and the wheels roll well. The Autobrand is, oddly, barely half an inch from the rubsign. Kind of redundant. The arms/fenders are a bit reluctant to fit tightly, but I chalk that up to the vagaries of old plastic. Not that bad overall.
The robot mode is where it kind of falls apart. Wheelie's sporting a hell of a hat brim, and his face smiles from his chest below a mighty hunch. The hands are merely etched into the inside surface of the fenders, rendering him a flipper-handed mutant from the front. The legs are weirdly scrawny, too, lacking the usual large "boots" of his brethren, and in fact his own animation model.
Articulation is naturally limited at this scale, and we just get swivel shoulders. There are an ab crunch and tilt ankles, but both only move in such a way as to tip the back-heavy torso over.
As an aside, the joints on this thing are worryingly tight despite (because of?) its age. I kept feeling like I was going to break the thing. Which would suck, because the only damage on it is a slightly worn Autobrand, and that's only because the seller had taped the price tag over it. That was a nail-biting few minutes with the X-Acto there. Still, couldn't argue with it for one dollar! Ah, the joys of apathetic flea market vendors.
Anyway, the only other thing worth mentioning is the rubsign, which is either oddly sensitive, or it's hotter than I think in here.
Well, that's Wheelie. Animated nonsense aside, this thing only looks good in one mode, totally dropping the ball with its portion of the movie-fueled new sculpt budget. Not recommended unless you're after a full movie set. Or you just get really lucky and think to yourself, "why not?"
