After Samurai Leo, Surfer Mikey, and Space Cadet Raph, you'd think Super7 would do an Ultimate Undercover Donatello next, but nope, it's Slam Dunkin' Don. It was supposed to be Punker Don, but that got pushed back by a lot, so here we are. Granted, an Undercover Don would've been great in this format, but I guess the BBTS-exclusive Undercover Raph filled the "turtle in a trenchcoat" quota. The portrait of the Slam Dunkin' Don was kinda weird. I suppose it's supposed to be a "game face," but the expression is still a little off-putting. Super7 and Four Horsemen did a good job recreating it in a larger scale, albeit without the goggles, and also threw in an extra head. Scumbug isn't a TMNT character you see talked about much. He wasn't really present much in past media, being just a one-time character in the original cartoon, and some other versions like the Archie comics barely looked like him, though Mutant Mayhem reintroduced him (or in it's case, her) to today's audiences. NECA already made a great figure of him a while back, but that hasn't stopped Super7 from making their own version. While NECA's Scumbug was a recreation of the toon design which was no different from the original Playmates toy, Super7's more directly updates the toy design. Judging from what been's shown off recently, it seems as if Super7 is shifting away from recreating old TMNT toy designs in both Ultimate and ReAction form. I believe Playmates wanted them to dial back or stop since they're going heavy into reissues as of late, and fears people would prefer S7's offerings (despite being completely different and pricier). It's a shame, since their vintage-inspired Ultimates have been getting better and better, such as the heroic bat alien Wingnut. Wingnut has a rather crazed expression here, with a wild-eyed stare and his tongue sticking out, but you'd be a little loopy too if you got sucked into a vortex as your home planet was being destroyed. Considering how the 80s TMNT cartoon was made to get kids (and adults) interested in the toy line, it's a bit of a surprise some characters didn't make it to figure form. Take the Punk Frogs, for instance; Genghis and Napoleon got made (with different designs), but Rasputin and Attila were not, and eventually vanished from the show. I'm 99% sure NECA was the first to do all four frogs, while Super7 only did the two that got the original Playmates treatment. Napoleon got a ReAction, while Genghis gets to join the Ultimates line. Unlike Napoleon, Genghis' toy design wasn't too much different from his toon appearance, but a bit more detailed. It's been a long while since any new TMNT Ultimates were released, not counting glow in the dark stuff, but now the seventh wave has arrived not too long ago. It's actually the eighth wave, but the true wave seven got pushed back by a lot, so that makes this the seventh wave in terms of release order. Although a robot version of the bumbling rhino Rocksteady had already appeared on the concurrent Ninja Turtles cartoon a few years prior, the 1993 Playmates Robotic Rocksteady figure, and by extension, the Super7 Ultimate, had a completely different design. The toy design is blockier and more silver than anything else, and Super7 changed nothing about it. A common element in the TMNT franchise, Mousers are small, chomping robots who are used to solve the city's rat problem and/or commit criminal activities. But the real purpose of them is to get wrecked by the heroes in case there's no robotic Foot Soldiers around. While NECA put out a great set of Mousers earlier this year, Super7 beat them to the punch. Does this little look familiar? He should, since it's the same Mouser we saw with the wave one Baxter Stockman. Standing around 3 3/8" tall, the Mouser's design is based off the "Wacky Action" figure from the original line, but without all those stickers on it, and since you can't just have one Mouser, this set includes three of them. After the first wave or so of Ninja Turtles figures, Playmates looked into other ways to do the four brothers and occasionally other characters. Kicking off a plethora of quirky turtle variants was the "Disguised Turtles" series, which gave each of the four brothers a different costume. In Leonardo's case, the level-headed Turtle leader became an honorable samurai. Comparing the original Playmates figure to Super7's newer "Ultimate" version, it can be noted that not much has changed, except for the head. The expression looks better than the original figure, with a less awkward-looking mouth, and the eyes aren't as narrow. One thing that can certainly be said about Super7 is that they loving doing glow-in-the-dark figures. How much so? Their first released TMNT Ultimate was one of them, before the regular version even came out. We've since gotten a few others, including the four turtles themselves in "Mutagen Ooze" variants. They looked cool, but the higher $65 price due to the rising cost of glow material, along with it being Super7-exclusive meaning absurd shipping costs kept me away. Just earlier today, I was able to secure one for a good price at the annual Maryland Toy Expo, and it's my favorite turtle: Raphael. Usually, the glow figure packaging isn't much different from the regular versions outside of different colors and some GITD accents, but that's not the case here. While I enjoy Super7's Ultimates, I'll admit they're overpriced. At $55 each for most figures, the inconsistent quality and occasional lack of accessories make it hard to justify the price. It looks like retailers such as Entertainment Earth realized this, and began marking them down. Ace Duck is one of those, and he's only around $24 there. I didn't get mine through them, but rather during a sale at my local comic store for only $30. Now why can't every Ultimate be that cheap? Ace Duck has a pretty weird expression, wide-eyed with gritted teeth. Is he supposed to be eager or nervous? It's what the original figure had, though, and Four Horsemen did a good job with him. I can't believe it took me this long to add this one to my collection, especially when I already have the redeco of him. As is the case was with most old TMNT toy designs, Baxter was very different from how he looked in the show. His show design was freaky but cute, while his toy design was freaky but… freaky. Compared to how he looked in-show, toy Baxter has a purble and blue head, messy orange head, and visible teeth. The head on the Super7 update looks no different from the original Playmates figure, except it's not stuck looking up. He's still got a bit of a neck there, though. The sculpt was done by Four Horsemen studios, who managed to keep, if not improve, the detail from the old figure.
