Looking for 90''s space villain Topic - Added by lookingforfigures
Saturday, April 26, 2025

I'm looking for a 90's villain action figure I had as a kid. It was purchased from a store in Canada between 1994 and 2002, likely 1998.

I tried drawing what I remember:

[Picture]

It had:
-detachable (likely) red cape
-Robotic metal greyish armor
-v shape with thinner legs
-possibly some green skin
-possibly some kind of antennas like things on his head
-The middle part was articulated I believe (mine broke in half)
-The box I think had some sort of comic book rendition of the character
-It was maybe 6-8 inches tall
-It kinda looked like a mix between ultron and martian manhunter
-no clue what franchise it might have been from but I'm confident it wasn't a knockoff brand

That's about all I remember. Any help would be greatly appreciated!...[See More]

Actually, I think this might have been it:

That's VERY close anyways. Only thing is that I seem to remember a red cape instead.....

Bart (Krusty the Clown Hat) Review - Added by RMaster007
Thursday, April 24, 2025

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Jakks Pacific is doing a great job with The Simpsons. Although their 5" figures are my favorite, the smaller-scale 2.5" line has been very fun as well, already having plenty of characters and even dioramas. I've almost completed wave two, having gotten Itchy recently thanks to Five Below, but I also just got all of the third wave, featuring a solid line-up of Springfield's key citizens.

Of course, they needed a main family member to be the hook of the wave, and Bart fills that role again. It's the same sculpt as the first-wave Bart, but the deco is slightly different. His shirt is white, and there's Krusty's head on it as well. Krusty's likeness is printed on, with a clean result, and the paint on the sleeves and shoes is clean as well. Other than that, it's essentially the Bart we got before, so expect the same sculpt and articulation. The accessory is unique, as he has a Krusty hat with the clown's hair on it. It's big enough to cover his spiky hair and fits over his scalp firmly. It also reminds me of a plush by Nanco, except the hat on that resembled Krusty's head rather than a plain cap with his name on it.

Bart isn't the only Simpson in the wave, as we get Abraham "Grampa" Simpson. At about 3" tall, I consider him a standout as he doesn't have a blank stare and smile like most figures do. He's in a grouchy mood again, complaining about today's youth or something like that. The portrait is great, and there's clean paint for the mouth and shirt, though there's a pretty obvious seam line between the jaws. His right hand is in a gripping pose while his left is a clenched fist, and it's not hard to tell Jakks wanted to recreate the "Old Man Yells at Cloud" scene. The torso looks a little slim from the side, but nevertheless, they did a good job with the body and outfit. He has a swivel neck, swivel/hinge shoulders, and hinged waist like usual for these palm-sized figures, but the legs don't go forward enough to sit down properly. Speaking of which, his butt is a slightly different color from the rest of the pants, much like Krusty from the previous wave. Why not just fully paint over the pants?

Next up is Milhouse, simultaneously being in the third wave of both scales. Standing a little bit below 2 1/4", Milhouse doesn't look too much different from his larger counterpart, save for the fact that he can actually rest his arms at the sides, thanks to little indents in the armpits for the sleeves. Shrunken down a bit, he looks just as good, including the paint, with good work on the eyebrows. The seat of the pants matches the color of the rest of them, giving him a small visual plus over Bart and Grampa. Milhouse's accessory is a Squishee cup, which looks pretty good, but it has a little tab so it can be held. The Playmates line had tons of Squishee cups that nobody could hold, so kudos to Jakks for finding a solution to that.

The third kid of this wave is Ralph Wiggum, who goes great with the other kids as well as his old man in the first wave. Standing a bit over 2 1/8", Ralph looks pretty good, but I can't help but feel the head shape is a little off. My other nit with the sculpt is the hair, as they did it as one piece glued to the scalp, which is what Super7 did with their Ralph, and it's not how his hair's supposed to look. It would've been better to sculpt the strands onto the head and paint them, and hopefully they'll do that with the 5" version. The body looks great, though there's a bit of a gap between the articulated lower half and the butt, and the shirt is a bit too bold in color. The paint on the collar and belt are fine, save for some bleed and slop. The iconic "I choo-choo-choose you" card Lisa gave him is included, using a sticker for the graphic, and it's very clear despite the small size.

Rounding out the wave is Jeff Albertson, the Comic Book Guy and most likely to buy up all the Itchy and Scratchy figures to mark up the value on them. At 3 1/4" he's a big guy, more so than Chief Wiggum, but the torso is hollow. He's the best sculpt of the wave, and it's helped by how he bears his usual unamused expression rather than the neutral smile almost everyone else has. The sit-down waist joint works surprisingly well, being able to kick forward a great deal thanks to the hollow shirt, but I haven't tried seating him in the booth at Krusty Burger yet (I already know he's too fat for it). The few paint apps on him are clean, though he too suffers from the mismatched shades of color on the pants. I kinda wish Jakks would include accessories with the adults, because I could see this guy coming with a Radioactive Man comic.

The third wave of the smaller figures is pretty nice, with great work on the sculpts and accessories, though paint could be a little better. The line-up is great as well, as it's nice to get some more kids, and who wouldn't want a figure of Comic Book Guy, the fat nerd nobody wants to be? Wave four is hitting stores now (I got Dancin' Homer yesterday), and I learned through a Facebook group that we should be getting up to wave six this year. Hopefully during that time we get more dioramas in addition to the recently revealed vehicles, because I would love to have the Kwik-E-Mart and Android's Dungeon with these figures.

Mayor of Halloween Town Review - Added by RMaster007
Monday, April 21, 2025

It's been a few years since NECA announced their return to The Nightmare Before Christmas, but I'm still surprised they started making figures again, even with the long-running Diamond Select line still going (they look great, but I never got any of them… yet). Jack and Sally are the ones everyone wants, but it didn't hurt for NECA to include another character, so here's the unnamed Mayor of Halloween Town.

In contrast to the tall and slender Jack and Sally, the Mayor is short and chunky, but nevertheless is one of the many unique denizens of Halloween Town. He too is sculpted by Marty Henley and Kyle Windrix, but not Andrew Lawson, so I assume he wasn't needed for the portrait here. The Mayor is identifiable by his two-faced cone-shaped head, with a jovial expression and mismatched eyes on the front, and a gray-skinned melancholy expression sporting symmetrical eyes on the back. The head looks great, with the sculpt and paint being much closer to the movie than the 2004 figure, though comparing it to screenshots, the happy face could have better paint. The tall top hat is a separate piece that fits snugly on top of the head, and there's a clear groove around the scalp that indicates how deep it goes into the hat.

Without the hat, the Mayor stands around 4 3/4" tall, more than half of Jack's height, but he is notably bulkier. The lower body feels solid, while the upper body has a hard plastic coat over what I believe is an underlying piece for the head and arms to plug into. They did a great job with the coat, right down to the black widow spider serving as his bow tie and the mayor ribbon. The coat has a subtle texture done by sculpting tons of tiny lines into it, and a somewhat rough edge as well. The paint is near perfect aside from the face issue mentioned earlier, with clean work all around, especially the pinstripe pants, and some wash on the coat and accessories. There are a few areas of bleed and some clumping on the collar, but those are the usual occasional blips from NECA.

The Mayor's design doesn't lend itself to tons of articulation like Jack and Sally do, but what's here still works well for him. He has a ball-jointed head and waist, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, and wrists, and barbell ankles. It's about the same as the original figure, though that seemed to have hip joints, which would've been great here and allow for more poses. Still, the articulation allows for expressive poses and moves mostly fine, but the head is very tight for some reason. It doesn't want to turn easily on the ball, and I don't understand why when the head is supposed to turn around to show his other face. The wrist joints are painted, but it's skin tone over gray joints, and it peels off very easily. C'mon NECA, haven't I dealt with this enough with Turtles?

The accessories aren't as plentiful either, but the Mayor has some neat accessories. The big book/ledger is the main piece here, with good paint and a few names written inside, but there's some glue residue on the back of mine for some reason. There's also a megaphone and ink bottle for him to hold, and speaking of which, the gripping hands can be swapped out for open ones, and they do so surprisingly easily. His plans for next Halloween are included, with three paper pieces containing sketches for decorations. Much better than the rolled-up blank paper the original came with. The clear base rounds things out, but it's the same one as Jack and Sally, meaning it doesn't line up with his feet. I was able to get him to stand without it though, but a better base would've been much appreciated, as well as the creepy duck the original had.

The Mayor isn't quite as good as the others, but he's still good, and it's nice to have someone aside from the main couple. I'm not sure if NECA plans on doing more characters, and I assume it's more likely we'll get other major players like Dr. Finkelstein and Oogie Boogie, but if they can go as deep as they did before, I'd be happy to build up a Halloween Town for my collection.

Batman (Lightning Strike) Review - Added by RMaster007
Tuesday, April 15, 2025

Although I don't care much for most of what McFarlane is doing with DC, their rereleases of DC Direct's Batman Animated line have been pretty good. I haven't bothered with the TNBA figures after wave one because they haven't done too well with them, but the BTAS line is featuring new variants and build-a-figures, so it's been more worth getting. The original plan for wave three, which featured a Bruce Wayne BAF, got bumped back to wave four (which is coming out now), but the new wave three lineup is pretty darn good. Distribution hasn't been great, however, but my local store got in a casepack a while back and I was able to get all four figures at once.

Batman once again leads the wave, and it's the same mold we've gotten in the previous two waves, with the same odd-looking head and legs, but the deco is new. His look here is based off the "Lightning Strike" Batman from Kenner's BTAS line, and it matches the old figure very well. The suit's black instead of gray, and is covered in a lightning bolt pattern. The paint is pretty clean, though there are a few black marks over the bolt shapes. The darker colors mean less shading, with only blue highlights on the gloves and boots, but they look nice. Batman stands 6 1/2" tall and has the same joints at the head, shoulders, elbows, forearms, wrists, chest, waist, hips, knees, shins, and ankles as before, and the hips move a lot better than before. Accessories are light here, but he does get a grapple launcher, recreated from the Kenner figure, and a pair of pointing hands… with the fingertips open? These are supposed to go with H.A.R.D.A.C., and I assume McFarlane wanted to include pointing hands, but were too lazy to make new molds. At least I have two other Batman figures to borrow hands from.

There's another variant in this wave, and it's the Joker, in a more festive outfit. Unlike Batman, DCD already did this look, and it comes from the classic episode "Christmas With the Joker." The Christmassy Clown Prince of Crime stands a bit over 6 1/4" tall, and is decked out in red and green clothes, save for his purple slacks, and is donning a Santa cap. He has the usual mischievous grin on his face, and although it's not quite as good looking as the other Joker we got in this line, they at least made the eyes the correct color. Some of the tooling is the same as well, including the hands and pants, but the paint is a lot better. The pants shading on the wave two Joker was way too dark, but the contrast here is much better, and the shirt and overcoat have good shading as well, with clean paint all over. The articulation is the same, with barbell head, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, and hips, hinged knees, and swivel waist and ankles. The hips still look weird when hinged out, but you can get some expressive poses with this guy, even with the lack of ankle rocker and/or hinges.

Unusually for these rereleases, Christmas Joker retains all of his accessories. He has three pairs of hands, with a set of fists and two different pairs of grips, as well as a "Laughy" hand. The puppet hand is a bit tougher to pop in due to the slightly thicker (and painted) peg, but it can be done. He also comes with a candy cane, and a wimpy little Christmas tree with five ornaments to put on it. The ornaments can rest on the branches easily, but I wouldn't try forcing them in through the little twigs, because the branches are thin, and it carries the risk of breaking something. The only thing missing here is the stand, just like everyone else, but the Joker will stand just fine on his own, thanks to the big, flat feet.

The other hero in this wave is Batgirl, and I'm glad they're putting her back out, since she was a later release in the DCD line and tends to go for high prices nowadays. Between this version and the TNBA figure, this one looks much nicer, mainly because the eyeholes in the mask are less obscured by shoddy paint (and not because of the debate between the two shows' designs). Barbara Gordon looks eager for her next mission, and the face is fine, it's just that the eyes could've been oriented better. She stands 5 1/4" tall, much shorter than the others, but these are meant to be 1/12 scale, so she fits. The sculpt, done by Irene Matar (but not credited with McFarlane), matches the usual female proportions of the show well, and the colors, while a little light, look much better than the original release. They handled the shading well with her, and while the cel shading's been an issue with previous figures, I think they finally nailed it with this wave. She doesn't have a cloth cape like Batman, as hers is rubber, but it still won't get in the way of anything.

Batgirl moves much like the others, namely Batman, but not quite as well. She has a ball-jointed head, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, and hips, hinged knees and ankles, and swivel forearms and shins. The lack of ankle rocker isn't much of an issue, since the shin joints allow you to keep the feet flat in deeper stances, but it bothers me that these DC animated women never have any torso movement. They could've easily implemented a chest joint, and it wouldn't throw off the sculpt too much. She's the figure here that could've really used a stand, since the thin feet make it trickier for her to stand in more dynamic poses. The Batarang from the original release isn't here either, but she does get plenty of hands: two closed, two relaxed, and three different sets of grips. The hands swap with no issue and work great in many different poses.

Lastly, there's Two-Face, another later release by DCD. He too goes for high prices nowadays, and the McFarlane release of the TNBA version sucked, so I'm glad this one is out again for a good price. The portrait is great, with the right side of his face being a stern, serious expression, and the left side is more deranged looking. The scarred half looks great, with mostly clean paint and a matte finish, but the normal half is too glossy, giving it an off look that the other figures don't suffer from. Another 6 1/4" figure, Two-Face is dressed in his black and white suit, and he looks great. The figure feels solid, with thick proportions for the suit, and the paint lines between the black and white are fairly good, but the work on the back could've been better. The shading looks fine as well, but they chose too dark a shade for it, methinks.

Since he was another near-end-of-line release, Harvey Dent showed how DCD managed to improve on movement in their final days. He gets a ball/hinged head (not as good as Batman or Scarecrow, though), swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, and ankles, ball-jointed hips, double-hinged knees, and swivel waist and thighs. He moves less like a DC Direct figure and more like a NECA figure, and you can get some great poses out of him. He lacks the machine gun from the original release, which isn't surprising given WB is less willing to include such items with toys nowadays, but how come he doesn't have his coin? That's like his main thing. He still has pairs of closed and gripping hands, as well as a dynamite bundle with a hand to hold it.

The build-a-figure in this wave is yet another one-shot villain, Maxie Zeus, coming from "Fire from Olympus." He's a bit of an odd villain, being a former shipping company CEO who went nuts and started thinking he was Zeus himself, but he's quite memorable. The portrait is great on him, with a serious expression, but the eyes look very off. It looks like they're printed on rather than painted, resulting in a blurry look, but the lines on the hair are pretty good.

Standing a little bit below 6 1/2", Zeus is dressed like how a Greek god would, with blue fabric draped over a bare torso, a skirt-like article over the waist, and presumably faux gold forearm cuffs and leg wear. Zeus is a pretty buff guy, with prominent pecs, and the proportions on the body are great. The upper body is solid plastic, but not too hefty, and the dress on the lower body is both soft and has slits in the sides, so it won't get in the way of leg movement. Oddly, Zeus doesn't have any cel shading like the others, and I guess they just didn't feel like it with him, but the paint is very clean aside from the eyes.

Even with these new molds, McFarlane made sure the articulation isn't too much different from what DC Direct did. Maxie has a barbell head, swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, and ankles, ball-jointed hips, hinged knees, and swivel waist. The joints move great, but I wish he got thigh joints like Two-Face did, and he really needed pinless joints in the elbows, knees, and ankles, as to match the other figures. He's a little accessorized for a BAF, with his lightning bolt alongside a gripping right and grasping left to go with the pair of fists he has by default. The hands swap easily, but for some reason they all have vertical hinges when it should only be the gripping hand that gets one. Still, it's not often a BAF gets interchangeable parts, and they'll help in various poses.

The first two waves of McFarlane's BTAS reissues were alright, but this wave is where they're really getting good. The line-up is varied but strong, especially with the opportunity to get two characters for a good price, and the shading and paint are a lot better. The accessories could've been handled better, save for Joker and Zeus, but everyone here is pretty fun to play with. Wave four seems to be out now, and a fifth wave, featuring fan favorites like the Grey Ghost and Jonah Hex, has been announced, and hopefully those are a bit easier to come by.
